Agile, hybrid, and predictive thinking on the PMP exam

Candidates lose points when they treat every project like a waterfall machine or, conversely, like a pure Scrum team with no constraints. The exam rewards matching the approach to uncertainty, customer involvement, and governance.
Predictive cues
Fixed scope, heavy upfront design, sequential phases, formal change control, and contracts that penalize deviation. Good answers respect baselines and documented change paths when those are the rules of the environment.
Agile cues
Evolving requirements, frequent customer feedback, incremental delivery, team self-organization, and learning through short cycles. Good answers refine backlogs, collaborate with the customer, and avoid giant upfront specifications when uncertainty is high.
Hybrid cues
Mixed signals are intentional. You might have a regulatory gate and an iterative build, or a fixed launch date with backlog-driven increments. The best option often blends ceremony: keep the compliance artifact, still deliver in slices, still talk to the customer.
Ask: what is uncertain, who must approve change, and how often can we get feedback? Those three answers usually select the life cycle.
Leadership stays constant
Servant leadership, transparency, and stakeholder respect apply across life cycles. Do not use “we are agile” as an excuse to hide status, and do not use “we are predictive” as an excuse to ignore the team.
Practice drill
Take ten scenarios and label each predictive, agile, or hybrid before you look at options. Then choose. This two-step habit prevents autopilot answers from your first certification course years ago.
Decision table you can memorize
High uncertainty with frequent customer access leans agile. Low uncertainty with heavy compliance gates leans predictive. Mixed uncertainty with immovable gates is hybrid on purpose. Write those three lines on a sticky note and use them before every practice set for a week.
When a question mentions both a contract baseline and a request for incremental demos, look for the option that honors the contract mechanism while still delivering learning early. That is hybrid judgment, not indecision.
Team behavior still matters
Life-cycle choice does not excuse poor leadership. Hiding status in an agile team is still wrong. Ignoring the team’s input in a predictive environment is still weak. Use life cycle to pick ceremonies and artifacts; use People-domain skills to keep humans aligned.
Remediation drill
Collect ten misses labeled wrong life cycle. For each, write the cue you missed in one sentence. Review that list before mocks. Most candidates discover they missed a single word like iteration, gate, or backlog rather than lacking methodology history.
